Router placement and Wi-Fi extenders
Most streaming complaints in the home are Wi-Fi complaints. A few small changes can remove them.
Where to put the router
- In the open, not inside a cupboard or behind the TV.
- As central as possible in the home.
- Up on a shelf rather than on the floor.
- Away from the microwave, cordless phones and thick walls.
Wi-Fi bands
Use 5 GHz for devices close to the router and 2.4 GHz for far rooms where the range matters more than the speed.
Extender or mesh
An extender repeats the signal. Place it halfway between the router and the TV, where the signal is still strong. A mesh system uses several units that work together and is better for large or multi-floor homes.
Powerline adapters
These send the network through the electric wiring. They can help where Wi-Fi cannot reach and a cable is impractical.
Test after every change
Run a speed test next to the TV after each change. Aim for a steady 30 Mbps or more at the TV.
FAQ
Do extenders slow the connection?
Some cut the speed by half. A good placement or a mesh system limits that.
Is a newer router worth buying?
If yours is more than five or six years old, a modern router often improves the whole home.
